What is Equality & Diversity?

During your course with Abacus, your tutor will include topics relating to Equality and Diversity, here is a list of terms that you will come across throughout your meetings with your tutor.

Equality 

Equality involves creating an environment where everybody is treated equally regardless of their background. Recognising that discrimination is unacceptable, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, ethnic, or national origin, marital status, age, colour, disability, career status or social background.

Equal Opportunities

 Equal Opportunities is about giving people the right to be treated fairly in employment, education, and services and not be discriminated against.

Diversity

Ensures that individual’s differences are treated with an equal level of respect and individual’s have equal access to services and training.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes are assumptions made about a group of people and are applied to individuals irrespective of their personal characteristics, because of their affiliation with a certain group.

Direct Discrimination

Direct discrimination is where a person is treated less favourably than another because of a protected characteristic, or how someone appears, or who they associate with.

Indirect Discrimination

Indirect discrimination occurs when a set of rules or practices are applied that effectively disadvantage those with a protected characteristic.

Positive Action

Positive Action is where an employer’s actions benefit a person or group of people who due to a protected characteristic may be disadvantaged during the workplace recruitment. This could include extra training or support not available to other applicants.

Discrimination Arising from Disability

Discrimination arising from disability is where the disabled person has been treated unfavourably because of something connected with their disability.

Positive Discrimination

Positive discrimination is where a person is given preferential treatment to minority groups of society that have been prejudiced against in the past.

Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act 2010 states the 9 protected characteristics as:

• Disability
• Sexual Orientation
• Gender Reassignment
• Gender
• Religion or Belief
• Marriage and Civil Partnership
