Achieving Your Dreams: The Art of Goal Setting
Goal setting is identifying something you want to accomplish and establishing measurable objectives and timeframes to achieve it. It’s about creating a vision for your life and devising a roadmap to turn that vision into reality.
The Role of Goal Setting in Wellbeing
Setting and pursuing goals can profoundly impact our mental and emotional health. It gives us a sense of purpose, drives us forward, and provides a tangible way to measure progress. Achieving our goals brings a sense of accomplishment
and boosts our self-worth and self-confidence.
What goals should I focus on?
This is entirely up to you. It may be a work goal, a health goal, a sporting goal, a family goal or learning a new skill. If you want to start goal setting, starting with a moment of self-reflection is crucial – What areas of life would you like to work on?
- Write down the different areas of your life – Health, money, home, family, friendships etc.
- Give each of these areas a satisfaction score – out of 10, with 1 being completely unsatisfied and 10 being completely satisfied.
- Think about your options – Look at the lower scoring areas; what could you do to improve the score of each area?
The smallest progress is still progress
Getting Started
- Set SMART Goals: Ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
- Break It Down: Large goals can be overwhelming. Break them into smaller, more manageable tasks.
- Write Them Down: Putting your goals on paper makes them more tangible. Keep them visible as a daily reminder of what you’re working towards.
- Create a Plan: Think about the steps needed to achieve your goals. Create a timeline and set deadlines for each step. Be prepared to be a little flexible to accommodate life’s challenges.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Every step towards your goal is progress. Celebrate these milestones to stay motivated.
- Stay Accountable: Share your goals with a friend or family member. Regularly update them on your progress for added motivation.
MOTIVATION FOLLOWS ACTION
We often wait until we feel motivated before taking action, but there may be better ways of looking at it. The sense of achievement and progress often leads to feeling motivated, so try taking the smallest step towards your goal and see how you feel once that’s done.
