What is mental health stigma?
The 10th of March is ‘No Smoking Day’ and for many this will fly under the radar. But for some it may be the que they need to give up the habit for good.
But why should someone consider giving up on smoking?
Well, we have all heard about the impact it has on your heart and lungs but something many don’t consider is the impact it has on our mental health.
Some smokers may tell you that smoking reduces their anxiety. But what is actually happening is that the cravings lead to feelings of stress and anxiety. So, lighting up might feel like it’s helping but it may well be causing the issue in the first place.
Smokers are much more likely to experience anxiety, depression and even Schizophrenia than the rest of the population. However, smoking also reduces the effectiveness of medication used to treat these conditions.
Should I quit smoking?
Nobody can tell you if you should or shouldn’t quit. We all know that the long-term benefits way outweighs the reasons to keep smoking, but you need to pick a time that’s right for you.
- Tell people around you that you’re thinking of quitting so they can remove triggers or temptation.
- If you’re taking any medications speak to your GP before quitting because it might impact how your medication works.
- Use a quit smoking app and stop smoking treatments to help you.
- Break it down into small milestones to make it feel less of a huge hurdle.
If it doesn’t work then be kind to yourself, be proud for trying and take the lessons into next time.
Quitting smoking can be as effective as antidepressants because of the improved mood and better quality of life.
