Men's Health Matters: Breaking Down Barriers

Today, we’re focusing on a crucial aspect of our community’s well-being: men’s health. In the UK, men’s health is a topic often shrouded in silence, hindered by outdated stereotypes. However, understanding and addressing it is vital for the health and happiness of half our population.

The State of Men's Health in the UK

Statistics paint a concerning picture: Men in the UK have a lower life expectancy than women, with heart disease, cancer, and mental health issues being significant contributors. A staggering 75% of suicides are by men, and men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women.

Also, did you know that men have a shorter life expectancy than women, averaging about 79 years compared to women’s 83 years? This disparity is less about biology and more about behaviour and societal expectations.

Tackling Unhelpful Gender Stereotypes

The ‘big boys don’t cry’ mentality and the expectation for men to always be tough and stoic are deeply ingrained in our society. These stereotypes not only discourage men from expressing perfectly healthy and natural emotions but also create barriers to seeking help.

These stereotypes shape how society views and judges men and how men view themselves when they’re completely false. Everyone cries, regardless of their gender and tough times in life will impact us all.

Big boys DO cry

Encouraging Men to Seek Help
  • Normalise Conversations About Health: Start open discussions about health in your family, friend circles, and workplaces. Normalising these conversations can make it easier for men to speak up about their health concerns.
  • Educate About Health Risks and Signs: Often, men aren’t aware of the signs and symptoms of various health issues. Providing clear and accessible information can be a game-changer.
  • Promote Self-Care: Encourage activities that promote relaxation and well-being, like exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep.
  • Encourage Professional Help: Suggest speaking with a charity or healthcare professional for guidance and support.

WHO IS IN YOUR NETWORK?

Men often feel lonely, and they don’t have anyone to support them. If you feel this
way, sit down with a pen and paper, scroll through your phone contact list and any
social media accounts and find people you would be comfortable talking to. Also, don’t dismiss brilliant charities like ‘Andy’s Man Club’.
